The DTTB Project: A New Era for Broadcasting
The Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting (DTTB) Project marks a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s journey towards digital transformation. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Health & Mass Media with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), this initiative aims to replace the outdated analog broadcasting system with cutting-edge digital technology. 2012-2013
Project Planning Phase
Comprehensive Feasibility Study by a team of experts from Japan in planning and strategy development commence, focusing on the nationwide adaptation of digital over common broadcasting platform under Japanese technology.
2014
Funding Source
Sri Lanka secures a SOFT Loan facility from JICA to initiate the digital broadcasting project, setting the foundation for future developments.
2017-2018
Special Assistance
JICA makes further study on special assistance in implementation of the project
2020-2022
Technology Advancement
JICA and GOSL agreed to update the technology adaptation to HD Technology in implementing of the project and begins the selection of consultants
2025
Engineering Consultancy Agreement
The official signing of the Engineering Consultancy Service Agreement on 3rd April 2025, marking a crucial step towards project implementation and starts the project implementation on 09th June 2025.
2026-2030
Implementation Phase
The DTTB Project will be fully implemented by 2029, transitioning Sri Lanka to a digital broadcasting era, and deactivating the analog system by 2030.
